i've been looking for clothes yesterday and today and it has suddenly occurred to me why vintage is so in demand. when you said salvation army to me the other day i thought, yes, why not? for a while now actually, because of the bad quality standardised clothing in the shops. this is something i've really noticed over the last couple of years. cheap fabrics, finishes, the lot. clothing is no different to cars, fridges, washing machine, comp and tv - short life products to fuel capitalist growth. the standardisation is horrific. it's like cloning. not just stepford wives but stepford societies, and thinking even. everything is the same. has an effect on my psyche, really...

everyone buying food from farmers markets, custom made furniture and clothing, vintage anything, is in rebellion against capitalist standardisation. if the most saleable thing has a look, then every producer will mimic this 'look' in order to compete. then you end up with various versions of this 'look', but without any choice.

vintage shopping aside, i think that an anti capitalist backlash will occur not by protest in the streets but with people buying sewing machines and learning how to knit. i think there will be a revival in traditional crafts. i think they'll be growing their own (organic) food wherever possible and breeding chickens. making furniture. building their own houses like the man below. a house for £3000?

Hello there friends!

A couple weeks back, my sister and I checked out the Brooklyn Flea Market and we both scored some pretty decadent footwear from the likes of some jovial people. We were given your card, and to my wonderful surprise we are up on the front page of your website, amidst some jazzy haitians and their equally jazzy merchandise with the ferocious NENEE155! logo in the foreground! how that picture captures the highlight of our day! We were told to blog about our experience, but as I am technologically delayed, I do not know how to blog, thus this email. so here it is:

Who knew that a rainy day in Brooklyn would provide my sister and I the most memorable and dare I say, delicious shoe shopping experience of our lives. My sister and I, hailing from Vancouver, Canada, rarely encounter moments of such bewilderment and fascination (aka it gets boring at times up here in the great white north), yet it was in the Brooklyn Flea Market with an encounter with a pair of rambunctious, yet solidly dressed Haitian men that our Canadian souls were captured! With the remark from one of the towering (well they were towering in my eyes) salesmen, my sister and I apparently had "rice and beans cheeks". With a quivering smile on my face not knowing if I should be offended or flattered and if i were to be stabbed in the face, I decided to continue to persue through their selection of attractive boots. My eyes were transfixed on a stunning camel-coloured pair showcasing laces that intertwined to the very top of the shoe; in my head I imagined Nancy Drew sporting these babies on a date with the Hardy Boys, thus I HAD to get them.

My sister was lucky enough to find a pair for herself too...i wonder which fictious characters she envisioned to be wearing her boots. Some verbal interactions with the properly dressed men occured, in which we found out that some of their proceeds went to Haiti (which compelled me to buy my Nancy Drew boots even more), that the 2 salesmen were not brothers, and that their friend from Japan was taking pictures for them(thank goodness for the clarification, I began to think that photographer was a creeper, alas he was not). As their scintillating beats infiltrated the Flea air, I could not help but shimmy my hips and do the swizzle whilst wearing my new footwear; i was THAT happy. Thankfully I was joined by new found Haitian friends (out of pity they may have joined in my shimmying, and if that is the case, such good people they are!) in our little jive. All in all my sister and I are so happy to have scored some awesome boots, but also had the opportunity to meet such fantastic peeps! Great energy plus great footwear = a bamboozling brooklyn experience!

I had a spent a good chunk of time at this stal, Nenenn 155. They sell a really good selection of vintage shoes and bags and I devoted quite a bit of time to trying on these Michael Kors shearling camel leather boots that were going for $80 (I got them down to $60...) because they had some kind of an internal fleecy sock inside that's supposed to help you get your feet in but actually made things more tricky. Good thing I did spend some time there as I had a good bit of banter with the owners who kept on insisting "I like you! You're smart! I like that". Yes, I know it's probably the English accent that threw them but I'm such a sucker for the 'smart' compliment. Jeers of "Hey Leng Lui (pretty girl in Cantonese)" in a Hong Kong street market don't really do it for me. Call me 'smart' however and I'll be handing over some cash. Idiotic, yes. I know it's about to be sweltering and having my legs being encased in a pair of shearling boots isn't exactly on the summer agenda but I thought I'd be smart about the whole boot-buying situation and just pick up these fairly affordable ones to get the ball rolling. The skies will probably send down some freak heat-wave during winter, won't they?

I also loved that the owners were bloggers too and the photo to the left is actually their Photoshop handiwork that they put on their blog illustrating customers' buys. So I didn't have to hide my somewhat sneaky/suspicious-looking picture taking... imagine the day when blogging is universally understood and I'll be pondering a similar question to the Google/mobile thing... "What did we do before everyone was down with blogging?"
